Granule is a new online course designed to equip researchers with the practical skills to recruit patients into randomised surgical trials. Although the course is principally aimed at surgery trials, researchers involved in any randomised controlled trial may also find it helpful to draw upon the insights from this learning resource.
The course focuses on the concept of ‘equipoise’, which means uncertainty over which treatment is best. Learners are taught to communicate this uncertainty to patients as well as how to explain randomisation and provide advice on treatment options. This means that patients will be more likely to understand clinical research and make a more informed choice as to whether to take part in a clinical trial.
By completing this course you will:
- understand why we need randomised controlled surgical trials
- understand how to convey clinical equipoise, explain randomisation and address patient preferences
- be able to successfully recruit to randomised controlled trials in surgery.
