Where do you work?

How long have you been in the post?
“35 years as a Nurse and in the Bariatric service for 8 years.”
What are your research interests?
“Exploring complementary and alternative therapies, investigating Non-Medical Practitioner roles and educating the wider on the management of bariatric surgical patients.”
How did you become involved with research?
“My passion in research began by exploring unanswered questions and uncertainties in my knowledge of traditional medicines and complementary and alternative therapies and the risks posed. I used my research modules in my Diploma and Degree courses to investigate this further. University continued build my research knowledge. I successfully applied for a joint Higher Education England and National Institute for Health and Research (NIHR) studentship, part of the Integrated Clinical Academic Programme. Undertaking this research programme allowed me to gain both academic and clinical research knowledge, which supports me in clinical practice.”
What has been your greatest achievement to date?
“Within Research; successfully attaining NIHR funding to complete my research project, alongside presenting and publishing the findings.”
What do you feel are the most important areas for research in bariatric surgery?
“Exploring the patient’s perception of their journey- how they accessed the service, their perception of their care, adequacy of hospital facilities for bariatric patients – including challenges and their perception of other health professionals views of bariatric surgery.
Explore reasons why patient regain weight, compliance with multivitamin supplements and eating behaviours.
Gaining understanding of the patient views of including physical activity as part of their weight loss regime.”
