President’s Welcome Message

It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to Cardiff for our 7th BOMSS Annual Scientific Meeting. BOMSS has grown in stature over recent years, with ever increasing membership numbers, and the annual congress has grown from our first venture in 2010 into a great annual event, which we can all look forward to after the Christmas and New Year festivities. This year’s meeting promises to follow on in that tradition and should be a truly magnificent scientific and social event.

For the first time, we are delighted to welcome our friends from SOBA and APSO. We all work together in the field of obesity and bariatric surgery and having them join us will not only increase the number of attendees but will make for much more widespread and interesting debates.

We have a wide range of national and international speakers coming to this year’s meeting, including guests from Europe, the USA and Australia. This promises to give us a fabulous scientific programme, with both trainee papers and well known experts speaking to us.  We have many interesting sessions, including health economics, the autonomic nervous system, new obesity drugs, microbiota and the metabolic syndrome, sleeve gastrectomy, single anastomosis gastric bypass, psychology, surgery in patients with type II diabetes, medicolegal matters and a new devices update.

As always, we have a training day on Wednesday 27th January, with a great and enthusiastic faculty. I would encourage as many trainees and AHPs as possible to come along a day early for what promises to be a superb day.

Cardiff promises to be a fabulous venue, with much to see and do in the Welsh capital. We have a wonderful gala dinner to look forward to in Cardiff City Hall on Thursday 28th January, with pre-dinner entertainment from the Morriston Orpheus Male Voice Choir.

Finally I would like to thank Mr Jon Barry and the organising committee for putting together what should be a superb two/three days. Diolch yn fawr iawn!

Mr Roger Ackroyd

BOMSS President
